Red Hat Chapter History
The Red Hat Chapter, Association of the Quartermasters, was formally recognized Saturday, 16 January 1999 at the main NCO Club, Ft. Bragg, NC. This is how it all started...
A few past members of the 109th Quartermaster Company (AD) and the 383rd Quartermaster Detachment (AD) met in Columbus, GA, May 28-29 1998 to discuss forming a Parachute Rigger organization that would include the 109th, 383rd, and the 623rd Quartermaster Companies. That decision was made since these three units were co-located at the same time and place, working together in South Vietnam. Discussions over breakfast at Ruth Ann's restaurant rendered a consensus among those present that such an association should be started.
Founding members of the Red Hat Chapter and those present at the breakfast were: COL(R) Albert Lanier, CWO(R) Lowell Hamel, SP5(R) Ray Anderson, CWO(R) Richard Pennington, 1SG(R) Arthur Goodrid, 1SG(R) Delma Weitman, SP4(R) Alvin Burk, and 1SG(R) Troy Oates. 1SG Oates was not present in Columbus, but became a founding member shortly thereafter representing the 623rd. Attendees at the breakfast took a short vote and decided to give the mission of building and perpetuating the Red Hat Chapter to 1SG(R) Delma Weitman. The building process began...
There were many meetings back in Fayetteville, Sanford, Raleigh, NC, and several trips to Ft Lee, VA. LTG(R) John Cusick (former Quartermaster General) agreed to give some of his time to 1SG(R) Troy Oates and 1SG(R) Delma Weitman to discuss the issue. After much discussion, it was clear that the best way to establish a Parachute Rigger organization with a solid foundation and support was to join the Association of the Quartermasters. This was done...
The Chapter was formally recognized Saturday, 16 January 1999 at the main NCO Club, Ft. Bragg, NC, when representatives from the office of the Quartermaster General presented us with the Distinguished Order of Saint Martin. This was willingly accepted by the newly appointed chapter President, 1SG(R) Delma Weitman and COL(R) Albert Lanier. The Chapter was on its way!!
The Red Hat Chapter now had a solid charter (set of rules) and was the only Parachute Rigger organization recognized by the Quartermaster Corp and the US Army.
The purpose of the chapter is to support and assist in the accomplishment of Army goals and objectives by fostering professionalism, instilling esprit de corps, and promoting camaraderie within the retired and active community of the Quartermaster Corp. We pledge to maintain tradition, heritage, and the history of the Parachute Rigger. We also strive to recognize excellence within Parachute Rigger units past, present, and the Quartermaster Corp as a whole. That is where we have been, where we are, and where we plan to go.
Past and present Parachute Riggers along with soldiers previously or currently assigned to Rigger units are invited to join this great Chapter and meet our members.
Come... talk about the past, the present, and our future.
Come... and reunite with fellow Riggers!!!
